Women to Kili

“Women to Kili” is a trip to the African continent, to discover a new culture through a program specially designed by and for women.

Our proposal includes the ascent to the highest summit in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, located in the northeast of Tanzania and which is part of the “7 Summits” circuit.

After enjoying this incredible experience, we will share a safari in the Tarangire National Park for two days, in which we will be able to see the wild flora and fauna of this beautiful land.

The route

Kilimanjaro or «mountain that shines» in Swahili language, is an 80 km diameter stratovolcano composed of 3 craters: Shira in the west (4006m), Mawenzi in the east (5149m) and Kibo whose highest point is Uhuru Peak or « “Freedom Peak” (5895m) named for the independence of Tanzania in 1961. The crater of the summit, known as Kibo, measures 2.5 km.

The chosen ascent route is the MACHAME.

It is one of the most beautiful with spectacular views. This route bypasses Mount Kilimanjaro from the southwest of the volcano through the entire southern wall of Kibo.

This route is one of the most beautiful and wild and it is the only one that offers the option of sleeping in a tent. In addition, our 7-day program in the mountains favors the acclimatization process to the altitude

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Tanzania, transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to the Key’s hotel in Moshi.

Day 2

After breakfast at the hotel there will be a sightseeing tour of Moshi city: the train station, the local markets, the curio shop along with tasting the local food. After lunch, we will return to the hotel to meet the local expedition guides. We will carry out the control of the team and the briefing prior to the ascent. Then dinner will be served and each one will rest and prepare to begin our trek the next morning.

We will leave our extra luggage at the Key’s hotel and pick it up when we return from our ascent on the way to Arusha.

Day 3

After breakfast, we prepare the backpack, making sure we have everything necessary to start the approach trek to the Machame camp (2833m). The group will be transferred from Moshi to the town of Machame (approx. 60 minutes from Moshi).

From this small village to Machame Gate (1830 m) it is not always possible to circulate by vehicle due to the accumulation of mud on the route, so it is sometimes necessary to walk the three kilometers that separate these two points.

Once there, the group will meet the local work team and we will register in Kilimanjaro National Park to begin the ascent. We will have lunch on the way.

We will walk about 11 km, which will take between 5 to 7 hours, through the tropical jungle. At the exit of the forest, we discover the summits of SHIRA, MAWENZI and KIBO. At Machame Camp, night temperatures may drop to zero degrees. Dinner and accommodation in a tent at Machame Camp.

Day 4

This day we begin to walk in a wooded area where they are increasingly clear. The camp is located on the Shira Plateau and offers views of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.

We will have lunch on the way. The distance of this day is 5 km. The walking time is 4-6 hours.

Day 5: Shira Cave Camp (3788m) / Lava Tower (4605 m) / Barranco Camp (3953 m)

You will walk from the Shira camp (3788 m) to the Barranco camp (3953 m). It is a very important day for acclimatization to altitude since we will pass through 4605 m. in the Torre de la Lava (where we will have lunch) and then descend to the Barranco camp.

The trail will ascend through the moors to the alpine area where the only plant life is the most abundant of herbs and lichens. This is the high altitude desert. The trekking time is 7 hours approx.

Day 6

During this day we will get wonderful views of the southern Kibo glaciers, weather permitting. It will be a relatively short but very valuable day for acclimatization. 5 kilometers will be traveled.

We will arrive at the Karanga Valley camp at lunchtime after a 4-5 hour hike. It is recommended that, once at the camp, a short acclimatization hike be made.

Day 7

The trekking during this day is a path in constant ascent. The temperature will cool down and the vegetation will be sparser as we climb higher on our way to Barafu Camp.

The camp is located on an exposed ridge and is the starting point for our attempt to the summit. At this point there are views of the top of Kilimanjaro from many different angles.

Once again, we will arrive at lunchtime, leaving enough time to rest before the summit day! The walking time will be 4 to 5 hours and 4 kilometers will be traveled.

Day 8

We started the ascent very early in the morning; there will be wind and the temperature will drop. The night climb takes us to Stella Point (5685 m.), Where we arrive at dawn. This point is located on the edge of the cimero crater and invites us to face the last effort to reach the top of Kilimanjaro or Uhuru Peak (5865 m). The highest point in Africa!

We enjoy the top as long as the weather allows us and we begin the descent. In about three hours we reach the Barafu Camp, where we will have time to rest, eat something, change clothes and continue the descent. We will go down to Millenium Camp to have dinner overnight. The distance to be covered is 5 km uphill from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak. The estimated time of ascent is 7-8 hours of ascent. The descent will be from the top to the Millennium Camp with a distance of 6 km and an estimated time of 2 hours.

Day 9

On this last day, after breakfast, the descent continues for 5 to 6 hours to the Mweka Gate (1630m), the exit gate of the park where we have to record our data. Distance of 20 km.

There, a vehicle will be waiting for us to take us to Arusha Loasis Lodge. There will be a celebration dinner and a meeting with the Tarangire National Park Safari guides for a brief explanation of it.

We will pick up our extra luggage at the Key’s hotel before heading to our new hotel in Arusha.

Day 10

Early in the morning they pick us up at the hotel to go to the Tarangire National Park where we will be all day discovering animals and birds. In the afternoon we will be picked up to transfer back to the Arusha Loasis Lodge.

Day 11

We will spend this day exploring the city of Arusha, walking and visiting a market area, curio shops and the cultural heritage of the place. In the afternoon, we return to the hotel.

Day 12

Breakfast at the hotel. Then we will go to the airport for the flights back home.

NOTE: The proposed itinerary is subject to change due to weather or force majeure contingencies that put the safety of the group at risk.
